EXHIBITION
Between Tradition and Transformation

The past, present, and future of the community centre in Amsterdam Noord

The community centre has always been more than a building: it is a space for community, connection, and collective action. From the first Dutch community centre Ons Huis in the Jordaan to iconic places like the Zonnehuis, the Rietwijker, and De Bol, community centres show how architecture reflects the ideals of their time.

This exhibition explores how residents and designers envision the future of the community centre. Using clay from twenty neighbourhoods, we created the Tiles of Noord, symbols of local connection and collective creativity. These collaborations inspired concrete ideas for innovative spaces – from open façades and outdoor stages to workbenches that make the stories of the community visible.

Between Tradition and Transformation demonstrates how community centres continue to evolve: from social experiment to cultural hub, and now as collective spaces for the city of tomorrow. Here, past, present, and future meet, and community becomes tangible – with head, heart, and hands.
