Studio
Studio Locus is an architecture and design practice founded in 2023 by architect Lorna Gibson-Tjebbes. Drawing from the Latin word locus—meaning place—the studio is grounded in the belief that space is not only physical but social, lived, and storied.
We design qualitative, socially responsive spaces that reflect the tangible narratives of place. From buildings to interiors and public installations, our work centralises the user and seeks to enrich the human experience of the built environment. As architects, we shape the everyday—affecting individuals, communities, and ecosystems. With that influence comes responsibility: to protect the tabula scripta—the layered, written landscape—and to design with care for memory, meaning, and belonging.
We believe the future of heritage-worthy architecture lies in empathetic design and contemporary craftsmanship, rooted in local culture and collaborative process. Studio Locus specialises in social impact projects—from sustainable renovations to inclusive urban transformations. We coordinate community-led redevelopment and create participatory design processes that engage informal stakeholders in creative, efficient, and often unexpected ways.
Our studio is based at Obiplein 18, a creative hub in Amsterdam East—where we work across cultural, domestic, and civic projects, always seeking to create architecture that is both poetic and purposeful.
Design
Studio Locus is dedicated to making well-conceived and thoughtfully detailed architecture for forward-thinking clients equally enthusiastic about design. From concept to completion, we guide renovation projects every step of the way—starting with spatial design and permits, through engineering, working drawings, and even bespoke furniture design. A concern for our client’s needs and a commitment to challenge preconceived notions of value are central to our working philosophy.
Technologies
Studio Locus thinks creatively together with our clients as to how technology can be integrated into a design. Attempting where possible to work with innovative, recycled, and sustainable materials and methods. And where possible to minimize (mechanical) installations and utilize the natural conditions of the building design and environmental context.
Narratives
We are trained to listen, translate, create, curate and innovate. We are dedicated to aiding the client, the contractor, and third parties in realising beautiful and meaningful spaces. We strive towards realising projects with an economical, sustainable and social balance. Every place and space has a history worth respecting and celebrating. Our designs expose what already exists and enables it to continue thriving for generations to come.
